Reciting the Sutras: Version 4

In a fourth version of the Zhaozhou story below, Dogen relates how his Chinese mentor, Ju-ching, who was once asked to read a lengthy sutra and deliver a sermon, drew a big circle in air with his fly-whisk and said, "Now I have read it for you!"

Then he cast away the fly-whisk and descended from the dais.
